Two Pathways, One Visa
Spain's digital nomad visa covers both employed and self-employed remote workers. Choose based on your work arrangement.
Remote Employee (Trabajador por cuenta ajena)
Employed by a company outside Spain, or a Spanish company where no more than 25% of total work is for the Spanish entity. Must have an employment contract or offer with at least 3 months of prior relationship with the employer.
Freelancer (Trabajador por cuenta propia)
Self-employed professional working remotely for clients outside Spain. No more than 25% of total revenue may come from Spanish clients. Must demonstrate ongoing client contracts.
Who Qualifies?
Remote Employees
Working for a company outside Spain (or a Spanish company where <=25% of work is for the Spanish entity). Must have at least 3 months prior employment with the company.
Freelancers
Self-employed professionals with international clients. No more than 25% of revenue from Spanish clients. Must demonstrate ongoing client contracts.
Important: The key requirement is that your work must be performed remotely for entities outside Spain (or with limited Spanish client revenue for freelancers). You cannot use this visa for in-person employment in Spain.
Required Documents
Valid passport
Passport with at least 6 months validity beyond the planned stay and blank pages for visa stamps.
Proof of remote work arrangement
Employment contract showing remote work for a non-Spanish company (employees), or client contracts and business registration (freelancers). Employees must show 3+ months prior relationship.
Proof of income
Bank statements, tax returns, or pay slips showing monthly income of at least EUR 2,520 (200% of SMI). For dependents, add 75% of SMI per family member.
Health insurance
Private health insurance from an insurer authorized to operate in Spain, with full coverage (no co-pays or limits) for the entire duration of stay.
Criminal record certificate
Certificate from your country of origin and any country where you've resided in the past 5 years. Must be apostilled/legalized and translated into Spanish.
Proof of accommodation
Rental contract, property deed, or hotel reservation in Spain. Required for NIE/TIE registration after arrival.
University degree or professional qualification
Degree from a recognized institution or 3+ years of professional experience in the field. Apostilled/legalized and translated into Spanish.
Passport-size photos
Recent passport-size photographs meeting Spanish consulate specifications.
Note: All foreign documents must be apostilled/legalized and officially translated into Spanish by a sworn translator (traductor jurado). Requirements may vary by consulate.

Important Restrictions

Tax Advantages — Beckham Law
General Tax Rules
Spain offers the Beckham Law (Régimen Especial de Trabajadores Desplazados) for new tax residents. You can opt for flat-rate taxation instead of progressive Spanish rates.
Beckham Law (Flat 24%)
Flat 24% tax on Spanish-source income up to EUR 600,000/year for 6 tax years (instead of progressive rates up to 47%). Income above EUR 600,000 taxed at 47%. Foreign-source income (except employment income) is exempt. Must not have been a Spanish tax resident in the prior 5 years.
