Malta Digital Nomad Visa Requirements 2026 — Complete Guide

Income Requirement

The minimum gross annual income is EUR 42,000 (approximately EUR 3,500/month). This can come from employment salary, freelance contracts, business revenue, or a combination. You must provide documented proof — bank statements, contracts, or tax returns covering at least the last 3-6 months.

Nationality Requirement

The Nomad Residence Permit is exclusively for third-country nationals (non-EU/EEA/Swiss). EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens already have freedom of movement in Malta and do not need this permit.

Remote Work Requirement

You must work remotely for employers or clients based outside Malta. This includes freelancers, remote employees, and business owners. You cannot work for a Maltese-based employer or primarily serve Maltese clients under this permit.

Health Insurance

Comprehensive health insurance covering Malta is mandatory. The policy must be valid for the entire duration of your stay. International health insurance plans from providers like SafetyWing, World Nomads, or Cigna Global are commonly accepted.

Criminal Record

You must provide a police clearance certificate from your country of nationality AND from any country where you've lived for 6 or more months in the last 10 years. Certificates should typically be issued within the last 6 months.

Passport

Your passport must have at least 6 months validity beyond the intended permit period. A certified true copy is required for the application.

Accommodation

Proof of accommodation in Malta is required. This can be a rental agreement, property purchase document, or hotel booking for the initial period. Many applicants arrange a rental after an initial visit to Malta.
