How to Apply for Malta Digital Nomad Visa — Step by Step Guide

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before starting the application, verify you meet Malta's requirements: non-EU/EEA nationality, remote work for employers/clients outside Malta, minimum EUR 42,000/year income, valid passport, and health insurance. Use our free eligibility checker to get an instant assessment.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

Collect all required documents: valid passport (certified true copy), proof of income (bank statements for 3-6 months, employment contract or client contracts), comprehensive health insurance covering Malta, police clearance certificate(s), proof of accommodation in Malta, CV/resume, and proof of remote work arrangement. All documents should be recent — criminal records typically within 6 months. Documents not in English or Maltese may need certified translation.

Step 3: Prepare Your Application

Complete the application form from the Residency Malta Agency (RMA). Ensure all fields are filled accurately and match your supporting documents. Double-check income figures, dates, and personal details.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Submit your completed application along with all supporting documents to the Residency Malta Agency. The application fee is EUR 300 per applicant (main + each dependent). Payment is made at the time of submission.

Step 5: Wait for Processing

The RMA typically processes applications within approximately 30 working days after receiving a complete submission. During this time, they may request additional documents or clarification. Respond promptly to any requests to avoid delays.

Step 6: Receive Your Approval

Once approved, you'll receive notification from the RMA. If you're from a country that requires a visa to enter Malta, you'll need to apply for a Type D (long-stay) visa at the nearest Maltese embassy or consulate before traveling.

Step 7: Arrive and Collect Your Permit

Upon arrival in Malta, you'll need to visit the relevant office to collect your physical residence permit card. Bring your passport and approval documentation. The residence permit is valid for 1 year and can be renewed.

Tips for a Successful Application

Provide more documentation than the minimum — extra bank statements, multiple client contracts, and tax returns strengthen your case. Ensure your health insurance explicitly covers Malta. Get criminal record certificates early as they can take weeks. If possible, visit Malta before applying to arrange accommodation and familiarize yourself with the country.
