Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa FAQ

Everything you need to know about Cyprus’s Digital Nomad Visa.

What is the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa?

It is Cyprus’s dedicated residence route for eligible third-country nationals who work location-independently through telecommunications technology for a foreign employer or for clients abroad. The route is handled by the Migration Department under the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection.

Who can apply?

The route is built for non-EU and non-EEA nationals who can work remotely through telecommunications technology and who are either employed by a company registered abroad or self-employed serving clients located abroad. It is not built for local Cyprus employment or Cyprus-client freelance work.

What is the minimum income requirement?

Cyprus currently requires stable and sufficient monthly net income of at least EUR 3,500 after taxes and contributions for the main applicant. Public route materials also add 20% for a spouse or partner and 15% for each child.

Does Cyprus count gross income or net income?

The route is framed as net income, not gross. The official accompanying-documents list asks for proof of salary payment showing net income plus detailed bank statements for the last 6 months. If net income is not explicit, the file may need an affirmation bridging the gross-to-net position.

Can I work for a Cyprus employer or Cyprus clients?

No. The official work proof and affirmation both point the same way: the project must not concern a Cyprus-based employer, and self-employed applicants must not provide services to clients established in Cyprus under this route.

Where do I file the application and when?

The current official page says the application should be submitted at the Migration Department in Nicosia within 3 months of arrival in Cyprus. Applicants already lawfully residing in Cyprus under another status may also apply there. Applications may be submitted personally or through an authorised representative.

How long does processing take?

The Migration Department currently lists an examination time of 5-7 weeks. Treat that as a public planning reference, not a guarantee, because missing translations, unclear work proof, and document gaps can still slow the case.

What documents do I need?

The main public checklist centers on the passport and latest-entry page, foreign remote-work proof, net-income evidence with 6 months of bank statements, criminal-record certificate, medical tests, health insurance, accommodation proof, and the affirmation against Cyprus-based work. Family cases also need civil-status records and, where relevant, custody or consent documents.

What are the official government fees?

The current official page lists EUR 70 for issuance or renewal of the temporary residence permit and EUR 70 for registration in the Aliens’ Registry on first registration. Build the initial-file budget around both amounts where they apply, and remember that medical tests, translations, and insurance sit outside those state fees.

Can my family come with me?

Yes, but keep the family file disciplined. The public route page says family members may reside in Cyprus for the same period as the digital nomad. The standard public group is spouse or partner in a civil union plus underaged children, and the income requirement rises by 20% for a spouse or partner and 15% for each child.

Can my spouse work in Cyprus on a dependent permit?

No. The public route page says family members have residence rights for the same period, but without the right to be employed or perform economic activity in Cyprus under this digital nomad route.

What is the tax caution on the official route page?

The official digital nomad page says that if you stay in Cyprus for one or more periods totalling more than 183 days within the same tax year, you are considered a Cyprus tax resident provided you are not tax resident in any other country. Treat that as the immigration-page starting point, not as a full tax-planning answer.

Can I travel in the Schengen area with a Cyprus digital nomad permit?

Do not treat the Cyprus permit as a Schengen residence permit. Cyprus’s official visa information says that Cyprus-issued visas and residence permits are currently valid only for the Republic of Cyprus until full Schengen integration, so onward travel questions should be checked separately against your nationality and current travel rights.

Can I renew the permit?

Yes. The current official materials describe a first temporary residence permit valid for 1 year and a renewal permit with a validity of maximum 2 years. The public route page says renewal applications should be submitted at least one month before the permit expires.
